The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative to provide support and services to individuals with disabilities. The NDIS is a significant departure from the previous disability support system, which was criticised for being fragmented, inefficient, and lacking in flexibility. The NDIS is designed to provide people with disabilities with more control and autonomy over their lives, allowing them to make informed choices about their support and services.

The NDIS is based on self-directed support, where individuals with disabilities can choose the services and support they need to live more independently. This approach empowers individuals with disabilities to take control of their own lives, rather than relying on government agencies or organisations.

To be eligible for the NDIS, individuals must have a permanent and significant disability that affects their daily lives. The NDIS is not limited to people with physical disabilities but also covers individuals with intellectual, cognitive, psychosocial, and sensory disabilities.

Supports and services for participants fall into three categories: core, capital and capacity building.

  • Core Support: Assistance provided to aid individuals in completing their daily living activities.

  • Capital Support: Funding allocated for investments, such as assistive technologies, equipment, home or vehicle modifications, or capital expenses (e.g., Specialist Disability Accommodation).

  • Capacity Building: Support aimed at fostering participants’ independence and skill development.

The NDIS Services or support that can be delivered include:

  • Assistance with Daily Life
  • Transport
  • Consumables
  • Assistance with Social & Community Participation
  • Assistive Technology
  • Home Modifications
  • Coordination of Supports
  • Improved Living Arrangements
  • Increased Social and Community Participation
  • Finding and Keeping a Job
  • Improved Relationships
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing
  • Improved Learning
  • Improved Life Choices
  • Improved Daily Living

The NDIS significantly changes how disability support is provided in Australia. It is an important step towards delivering more choice and control for individuals with disabilities and creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
